United Nations International Year of Human Rights Learning

Inspired by the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the United Nations (UN) has declared 2008/9 the International Year of Human Rights Learning to ensure this aspirational document is enlivened and relevant to all today.

In recognising that human rights are universally granted, but are not universally respected, Binaal Billa Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (BBFVPLS) has developed Spirit Hunter: Sharing Stories of Our Humanity.

Spirit Hunter invites the community to not only hold sacred the words of the UDHR, but to actualise the potential by translating the text into practical form.

If we do not make the UDHR ever-present, we may consequently begin to re-define what it is to be human, what human rights are and indeed, our sense of humanity. However, in exploring rights ‘in our backyard’, we can come to understand the universality of all human rights. Then perhaps, in this microcosm of humankind, we of Binaal Billa, can connect to human rights at home.

What is Spirit Hunting?

Hunting, in the ancient traditional sense, is about seeking out sustenance in order for a community to grow and thrive equal with their environment.
Spirit Hunting therefore, is about seeking out sustenance for intangible qualities, including our potential and ability, in order to give lifeblood back to our communities. This quest for spirit reminds us that our stories are our own, but our destiny can be shared, in our homes and our land in this Year of Human Rights Learning.
